Disposing of Styrodur in Berlin: What is the difference to Styrofoam?

Styrodur and Styrofoam are made of the same material, namely polystyrene. Styrofoam is the expanded version, while Styrodur is injected into a smooth shape. One is full of small bubbles, the other is relatively flat with very few air pockets.

The disposal route is the same: small amounts of Styrofoam packaging belong in the yellow bag or yellow bin. You should take large quantities and insulation material to the recycling center or ask us to do it for you. Since most private individuals do not have a large enough vehicle, they often call us for help in this case. Companies, on the other hand, usually lack the time and staff to personally take care of the disposal of your Styrofoam or Styrodur.

Why isn't Styrofoam allowed in the yellow bag?

Styrofoam packaging is allowed in the yellow bag, but insulation material is not. This can contain flame retardants and therefore belongs in the residual waste or directly in the landfill.
